1. Water retention: Cellulose can lock in water several times its own weight, preventing water loss in the mortar too fast. Its water retention effect depends on the water absorption of the base, the composition of the mortar, the thickness of the layer, the water requirement and the setting time of the condensate material. In general, the greater the viscosity of cellulose ether, the more added, the finer the particles, the better the water retention.


2. Thickening: increase the viscosity and cohesion of the mortar, improve the shear strength and carrying capacity of the mortar, so that the slurry is not easy to stratify.


3. Improve construction performance: cellulose gives mortar shear force during construction, which can release the locked moisture, reduce the consistency of mortar, make it have good workability and constructability, and facilitate construction operation;


4. Delay cement hydration: cellulose ether molecules will be adsorbed on the mineral phase in the cement hydration system, and increase the viscosity of the pore solution, reduce the ionic mobility, and then delay the hydration process of cement, but different types and viscoses of cellulose ether have different degrees of influence on the hydration kinetics of cement.


5. Film formation: a film is formed on the surface of the mortar, which has a greater impact on the performance of the mortar. For example, in wet mortar, as the water evaporates, the cellulose ether on the surface of the mortar gradually concentrates and forms a film, which reduces the subsequent evaporation rate. Suitable film thickness is beneficial to improve the performance of mortar.


6. Improve durability: help to improve the water resistance, weather resistance, freeze-thaw cycle resistance of mortar, etc., extend the service life of decorative mortar. For example, improved permeability and crack resistance can reduce the freeze-thaw effect of water entering the concrete interior, as well as the effect of rust on the steel bars and steel fibers in the concrete structure.
